Old Lisbon
This walking tour invites you to discover the hill where Lisbon was born and where the soul of its oldest neighborhoods beats: Alfama and Bairro do Castelo (also known as Alcáçova). Here, traces of past civilizations blend harmoniously with the current lifestyle in these popular neighborhoods.
The Experience
Our journey begins in front of the unique Casa dos Bicos (José Saramago Foundation). Let yourself be transported back to Roman Olisipo, where memories of Garum production, the amphitheater, and the thermal waters—later named Al-Hamma by the Moors—still echo.
We will climb up to the Lisbon Cathedral, built in 1150, and continue exploring the Alcáçova do Castelo de São Jorge. Along the way, we will pass by one of the hill's stunning viewpoints, which offers a panoramic view of the Tagus River and the houses below.
Once we reach Largo das Portas do Sol, and after admiring the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, the National Pantheon, and the majestic Serra da Arrábida, we will dive into the narrow streets of Alfama, the fishermen's quarter where Fado was born and can still be heard today.
